A house publication pressing its own record is not new. A house publication waiting twenty years to do it, then handing the entire A-side and B-side to the people who built the city's sound, is a statement about who the anniversary is actually for.

Why is a magazine pressing a record now?

5 Magazine has covered Chicago house since 2006. For its 20th anniversary it has put out its first physical release, a vinyl-only 12" called "With Love: Celebrating 20 Years of 5 Magazine," and every track on it is new and commissioned, not licensed back-catalogue. Mike Dunn opens with "Don't Let Love (Git Cha Down)," Jamie 3:26 and Danou P take A2 with "Keep On," and Roy Davis Jr. closes the B-side with "Atmospheric Flight."

The object itself carries the editorial logic. The first 100 copies are pressed on pink vinyl, first come first served, and the sleeve is a collage built from almost 100 photographs pulled from the magazine's own archive. It sells for $20, and it is framed as the first of several anniversary projects rather than a one-off souvenir.

What does this have to do with the city honoring Mike Dunn?

The timing is the story. On 18 March 2026, in Daley Plaza downtown, the City of Chicago passed an official resolution recognizing Mike Dunn's career, presented by Aldermen Desmon Yancy of the 5th Ward and Pat Dowell of the 3rd. It landed during the week of Dunn's 60th birthday, after nearly 40 years in music.

"It's a beautiful thing to come from nothing and be something," Dunn said.

So within the same season the city put a Chicago house elder on a civic stage, the magazine that has documented that scene put him at the top of its first record. The recognition is happening on two tracks at once, one institutional, one cultural, and they point at the same people.

What is the magazine actually betting on?

Vinyl-only, limited, archival, no streaming hook: this is a deliberate refusal of the discovery-feed economy. The bet is that a deep-house readership will pay for a finite object tied to names and a place, and that the value sits in provenance rather than reach. Twenty years of credibility is the asset being converted here, and it is being spent on the originators rather than on whoever is charting this quarter.
