What did deadmau5 actually do?
deadmau5, the producer born Joel Zimmerman, quietly covered roughly $30,000 in medical care for 36 cats taken in by the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton and Halton, the shelter that serves the Ontario town where he lives. The rescue started on 27 May with 27 cats and kittens pulled from a single home; nine more from the same place followed, bringing the group to 36 and the shelter's cat population to about 101. By the local accounts, Zimmerman saw the appeal and reached out over Instagram.
Why did the bill reach $30,000?
None of the animals had ever seen a vet. The money covered exams, vaccinations, spay and neuter surgery, microchips, food and daily care, plus emergency surgery for one cat with a life-threatening infection. For a shelter that had just absorbed dozens of unvetted animals at once, one private donor clearing the entire medical tab is the difference between months of fundraising and getting the cats adoptable now.

Is this just a celebrity photo op?
It reads as the opposite. Zimmerman is a local, not a distant headliner, and cats run through his whole identity: his late cat Professor Meowingtons became a fixture of deadmau5 lore, merch and stage references included. There was no foundation, no campaign, no branded hashtag here, just a guy paying his hometown shelter's vet bill and joking about adopting one of the survivors.
