What exactly is 'Keep It Tribal'?
On 5 June 2026, Ewan McVicar put out 'Keep It Tribal', an unofficial Scotland anthem for the FIFA World Cup 2026, released under the banner 'The Scheme & Clanadonia'. It is not a novelty terrace chant with a 4/4 stapled on. It is a euphoric dance record that runs spoken word, bagpipes and pounding tribal percussion through the same arrangement, and it lands with the tournament kicking off on 11 June 2026.
The cast is the fun part. McVicar built it with Clanadonia, the Scottish bagpipe-and-drum band, writer Stuart Crichton, poet Bryce Drennan, and actor Tommy Flanagan (yes, the Sons of Anarchy and Braveheart one) lending his voice.
Why does an Ibiza DJ get to write the Scotland song?
Because McVicar is one of the country's biggest current club exports. The Ayr-born producer was named Best DJ at DJ Mag's Best of British Awards in 2023, and he is in the middle of a residency at Hï Ibiza that runs through 2 October 2026. His 2022 track 'Heather Park' got a fresh remix earlier in 2026.
The anthem already had a soft launch: it got its first public airing during McVicar's headline set at Pavilion Festival in Ayr in May 2026, on home turf, before the record proper arrived in June.
A current-era club DJ with an Ibiza booking made the national football song, bagpipes and all, and it actually knocks.
Why now?
Scotland has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, so the appetite for a tune to sing was always going to be there. The unofficial football anthem is a long British tradition, usually handed to a rock band or a comedian. This time it went to a dance producer, and the timing (release first, tournament a week later) is no accident.
