The Box, the main room at London's Ministry of Sound, has been famous for its sound system since the club opened in 1991. For 15 years that rig went untouched. As the club turned 35 in 2026, it finally pulled the room apart, and the brand it chose to rebuild around is KV2 Audio, a result that says as much about how clubs now buy sound as it does about the room itself.
How do you actually choose a club sound system?
Not from a brochure. Ministry shortlisted six loudspeaker brands. Three got on-site demos. The two finalists were each fully installed in The Box and left there for roughly a week so resident DJs and technical staff could live with them on real nights. That is an expensive, slow way to buy, and it is the right one. A club system is not judged at a trade show; it is judged at 3am with a full floor absorbing the bass.
"KV2 was the clear winner, chosen for its sheer quality and performance, which was praised by resident DJs and technical staff," said Louis Jemmott, Sales Director for Touring and Live Events at Patchwork London, the integrator on the project. The discussions started back in 2022 and only turned into a build in 2024, then a teardown in January 2026.
What is actually in the room now?
The main floor runs a six-point KV2 system: six SL412 loudspeakers flown from the ceiling, two at the rear, two in the middle, two at the front. Low end comes from eight VHD4.21 and six VHD2.16 subwoofers. The booth gets its own monitoring (ESD312s on ES1.8 subs), and the VIP and standing-deck areas get a separate ESD-series setup. Behind the speakers, the old BSS Soundweb processing was ripped out for QSC Q-SYS, with NETGEAR switching and touchscreen panels so staff can reroute and stream audio between The Box, the booth and the VIP zones.
A club running a week-long, two-finalist bake-off in its own main room is the gold standard most venues skip and then regret.
Why does the brand choice matter?
Because KV2 is not the obvious name. Club installs at this level usually default to the big touring brands. "This marks a significant moment in our history... we have undertaken the first change to The Box sound system in 15 years," said Oscar Zammit, Technical and Production Manager at Ministry of Sound. Jemmott added that "KV2 designed the system themselves, giving us a clear framework to work with," meaning the manufacturer specified the room rather than handing the integrator a parts list. For a venue whose entire identity is built on the phrase "sound system," handing that design to a less-default brand after a fair fight is the story.
