How does PhenoType work?

Type a description, a sound, a texture, an instrument, hit EXE, and Sonic Charge's new PhenoType tries to build it. Every result lands as a normal Synplant patch you can then mutate, branch and evolve like any other, not a frozen render you are stuck with. Under the hood is a neural network trained on roughly 60,000 patches, reading over 200 tags and around 1,000 synonyms, so it has a real vocabulary for the weird words producers actually use.

The tool is free, with one condition: you need a Synplant 2 license to download and run it. It is the work of Magnus Lidström, the Swedish developer behind Sonic Charge, who has spent two decades making instruments that reward poking at them.

Why does 'offline' matter here?

This is the part that should make producers look twice. PhenoType runs entirely inside Synplant 2's own JavaScript engine, with no cloud processing and no internet connection required. Most text-to-sound AI phones home: your prompts and your habits become someone else's training data, you need a connection, and you wait on a server. None of that here. Nothing leaves your laptop, there is no latency, and it works on a plane.

The clever part is not the text box. It is that nothing leaves your machine, and what comes back is a patch you can actually open up.

Is it actually useful, or a gimmick?

Synplant's whole identity is exploration: you grow and cross-breed sounds like a garden rather than dialing in oscillators by hand. PhenoType is just a faster on-ramp to a starting point you then twist into your own. It sits next to Genopatch, the engine Synplant 2 launched with in 2023, which does the same trick from an audio sample instead of a text prompt. Two doors into the same editable result, which is exactly why this is more than a novelty.
