Behringer describes it as a faithful reproduction of the original AKS VCO and VCF circuitry from the 1970s, with the analog signal path preserved end to end rather than modeled in a chip. Under the hood sit three separate oscillators with variable saw and square waveforms, wired for three-voice paraphony or unison, alongside a 16-step motion sequencer that records tweaks in real time. It is a VCS-3-style design, the same architecture family EMS built the AKS around, shrunk into a pocket-sized, portable analog synth with programmable patches.
Why does the original synth matter to this scene?
The EMS Synthi AKS built its reputation as the instrument in the room for a specific, unstable strain of sound design. Pink Floyd ran it through their 1970s sessions, Brian Eno leaned on it for texture work that shaped ambient and early electronic production, and its semi-modular pin-matrix routing became shorthand for a kind of alien, hands-on synthesis that plenty of underground electronic producers still chase decades later. The catch has always been access: original units are scarce, fragile, and when one does surface on the vintage market, it sells for thousands of dollars, out of reach for anyone without serious collector money.
