What happened?
Pacha New York secured a temporary conditional liquor licence from the New York State Liquor Authority on 30 May, clearing the last big hurdle before opening. To get there it surrendered the licence of Avant Gardner, the operator of the former Brooklyn Mirage at 140 Stewart Avenue, formally cutting ties with the previous tenant.
Why it matters
The Brooklyn Mirage was the biggest US club story of the past year, shuttered after safety and permit failures. Its rebirth as Pacha New York hands one of the city's marquee big-room spaces to a global Ibiza brand, and signals where the capital behind large-scale house is flowing.
The catch
The clean slate comes on a tight leash. Pacha pledged $27m over ten years toward safety and community initiatives, plus $3m for Brooklyn projects, an on-site infirmary and a private ambulance. SLA chair Lily M. Fan was blunt about the conditions: "if the sound pollution is very severe, I'm going to ask you to build a building there." The venue is targeting a 13 June opening.
