How do you prototype a grid instrument for nothing?

You raid a toy box. Before Push was the sleek black slab that lives on top of half the laptops in any green room, it was a pile of Lego. Ableton's head of hardware Jesse Terry built the first working mock-up by sawing apart controllers he already owned and gluing the buttons he wanted onto Lego bricks. The point was speed and zero commitment. Nothing was glued down for good, so nothing was a decision he could not take back the next morning.

The guts were borrowed. The pad section, the part that became Push's signature, was a Novation Launchpad. The knobs and faders that flank the pads were lifted from a Novation Remote SL Compact, and the Lego was the chassis that held those side controls in whatever position Terry was testing that week.

"The Lego prototype went through many, many phases of moving buttons around. It was playful and not permanent," Terry told the Powerhouse Museum.

Why does a toy-brick mock-up matter?

Because the layout is the instrument. A grid controller lives or dies on where your hands fall, and you only find that out by moving things and playing. Cardboard and Lego let Terry chase the feel instead of the spec sheet. He has said he chopped up a bunch of other products and sampled the parts he wanted, the same instinct a producer brings to a sampler, applied to hardware. That throwaway approach is why Push, when it shipped in 2013, already felt resolved: the ergonomics had been argued out in plastic long before anyone tooled a single mould.

There is a quieter idea in there too. Terry talks about the small human variations "off the grid" that give music its soul, and Push was built to keep some of that looseness rather than quantise everything into a rigid box. The Lego stage is where that philosophy got physical.

Why is it in a museum now?

Because it is a real artefact of how modern electronic music gets made. Sydney's Powerhouse Museum, Australia's big design-and-technology institution, has acquired one of only two surviving Push prototypes and filmed Terry walking through its origins. A glued-together Lego rig sitting in a national collection next to proper historical instruments is a fair signal of how central the laptop-and-grid setup has become to the way records are actually built now.
