Buchla is a name most house and techno producers know as a sound rather than a thing they could ever own: West Coast synthesis, the complex oscillator, the low-pass gate, all of it locked behind four-figure modular systems and a wall of patch cables. Ziggy, revealed on 5 May 2026, is the company's attempt to hand that sound to people who never bought into the modular religion. It is a desktop instrument, it has no patchcords, it saves its sounds, and it costs 999 dollars.
What makes Ziggy a Buchla and not just another desktop synth?
The core is genuinely the West Coast architecture. A fully analogue Complex Oscillator that starts from a sine and folds into spikes, squares and saws through a Timbre wavefolder. A Modulation Oscillator that runs slow as an LFO or up into audio range for AM and FM. A low-pass gate with a Sallen-Key design that works as a VCA, a filter, or both at once, which is the plucky, organic envelope behaviour Buchla is loved for. There is an extra triangle LFO on top.
The modulation brain is the Cycler, a single source that behaves as a clock, an envelope, an LFO and a random generator, with an uncertainty control that introduces controlled chaos. That is the part that makes Buchla patches feel alive rather than programmed, and here it is built in instead of cabled together.
Why does the patchcord-free design actually matter?
Because the cables are the entry barrier, not the price alone. Buchla itself frames the goal as "the focus on making an 'instrument' rather than a 'synthesizer,'" and Ziggy delivers that by putting digital control over the analogue audio. You assign modulation from the panel, and crucially you can create, save and recall over 100 factory and user presets. A modular Buchla forgets everything the moment you unplug it. Ziggy remembers, which is the single change that makes it usable on a stage or in a session.
A Buchla you can recall is a different instrument from a Buchla you have to rebuild, and that one feature is what drags this lineage onto a club stage.
The enclosure is oak and steel, it powers over USB-C, and a digital effects unit adds reverb, delay, distortion, chorus, pitch shift and flanger to the final sound. There is no keyboard on board; you drive it over MIDI from any controller, or pair it with Buchla's LEM218 in a bundle at 1,999 dollars. CV, gate and 1V/oct inputs and external audio into the low-pass gate keep the door open to a wider rig, and there is a browser-based editor over MIDI.
Is this the one that gets Buchla into house and techno studios?
It has the best shot of any Buchla so far. The complex oscillator and low-pass gate are exactly the tools that give organic and deep-tech house its woody, percussive, breathing textures, and the wavefolder is a fast route to the metallic overtones minimal producers chase. The catch is real but small: shipping is estimated for August or September 2026, and 999 dollars is accessible only by Buchla standards. Against a normal desktop analogue synth it is still a premium ask. What you are paying for is a sound design philosophy nobody else makes, finally without the cable spaghetti.
