What did MEDI publish?
The Music Economy Development Initiative, a partnership between the Center for Music Ecosystems and Global Citizen, has expanded its data portal to map national music ecosystems across all 55 African countries, 65 globally. Its headline figure: nearly $286 million in recorded-music revenue goes uncollected in Nigeria and Kenya alone. The portal also flags that 46 countries worldwide still have no functioning copyright system.
Why it matters for house
Afro house and amapiano are powering dancefloors from Ibiza to Tulum, but the money doesn't flow back evenly. When collection societies and rights infrastructure don't exist or don't work, streams and licences generate revenue that never reaches the producers who made the records. This is the plumbing underneath every "Afro house takeover" headline.
The bigger picture
Against a ~$47.5bn global recorded market, the uncollected sums in just two African countries are a rounding error to the majors and a fortune to the artists owed them. MEDI's bet is that you can't fix what you can't measure, and now the gap is on the record.
